You might not believe anything Apple says, but other sources say HFS+ is obsolescent and 'APFS was designed for flash-based devices' such as SSD. I have a Samsung T3 portable SSD, formatted exFAT (not expat) and it seems very fast.Īs far as I can tell, 'extended with journaling' is a type of HFS+ filesystem. I don't believe everything Apple tells me. they are really difficult to work with as I can no longer use them as BackUps. I had 12 Western Digital external hard drives and filled them all easily except the 4 I had formatted as ExFAT. I am doing that now!!!Īpparently apple slows down ExFAT to a crawl to not working at all.

I use Mac and Windows and was reading to reformat to Mac J. I just purchased 2 x 1TB SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD.
